“O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good: because His mercy endureth forever.
Let Israel now say, that His mercy endureth forever.
Let the house of Aaron now say, that His mercy endureth forever.
Let them now that fear the Lord say, that His mercy endureth for ever.
I called upon the Lord in distress: the Lord answered me, and set me in a large place.
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?
The Lord taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me.
It is better to trust in theLord than to put confidence in man.
It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes….
God is the Lord, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords,
even unto the horns of the altar.
Thou art my God, and I will praise Thee: thou art my God, I will exalt Thee.
O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good: for His mercy endureth forever.”
Psalm 118

Truly the Lord has done great things for us.  Sometimes it is easy to get so caught up in the discouraging facets of the political landscape that we forget the many, many things for which we should be thankful.  God has given us so many blessings: His Son, life, health, family, and the priceless gift of freedom in a great country.

May God bless you on this day, and may you have a Thanksgiving filled with gratitude to God, who is the Giver of every good and perfect gift.  Happy Thanksgiving!

At the close of every election cycle it seems that there are always some who cry for the abolition of the Electoral College, due to the “unfairness” of the current system.  A poll taken in 2007 found that 72% of Americans supported the the idea of replacing the Electoral College with a direct election.  Organizations have been founded with the goal of making our elections more “fair” (see www.fairvote.org), and some states have already taken steps to undermine the Electoral College (see National Popular Vote Interstate Compact – Wikipedia).

The reason the idea of a national popular vote finds such acceptance is not because the majority of Americans have weighed the choices with which the Founding Fathers were faced and disagree with their conclusions.  On the contrary, the problem is simply that the great majority of Americans simply do not understand how the Electoral College works, and why the Founders chose that system over a popular vote.

Since that is the case, it is time for us to step up to the plate to help address this issue.  We would like to challenge all our Patriots to:

1. Read David Barton’s article about the Electoral College

2. Write an opinion editorial or a letter to the editor of your local newspaper in defense of the Electoral College

You don’t have to be a great writer to write an op-ed or a letter to the editor.  Strive to do your best, but the main goal is to get your opinion printed.  Here are some links with tips for successful op-eds.

How To Write A Successful Op-Ed

How To Write An Op-Ed Column

Remember, the first step to changing public opinion is to get your viewpoint out there.  This is a great way to do that, and one we all should utilize regularly.   When you have successfully completed your op-ed or letter and submitted it to your newspaper shoot me an email, and I’ll recognize you here on the blog!

Have fun and happy writing!

MARCHING TO THE DRUMBEAT OF FREEDOM

Nov. 15, 2008    Vol. 1  Issue 11

From Your Lieutenant Governor

This past election cycle has been the most interesting, gut wrenching roller-coaster ride I’ve ever seen. There were both highlights and low points for conservatives throughout the whole process, but at the end of the day, we saw the epitome of liberalism become the President-elect of the United States. This begs the question, “How did this happen?” and perhaps more importantly, “How can we prevent it from happening again?”

The trouble is that the Republican Party has lost confidence in the principles that made our nation great. It has been rightly stated that America is the only nation that has ever been founded on a creed. Limited government, individual liberties, free enterprise, and traditional values are the cornerstone of freedom, in this country or any other.

However, our politicians began to lose confidence in those principles, and perhaps even to question them in their own hearts. Over time the rhetoric was “softened” to sound more mainstream, and hopefully appeal more to those on the other side of the aisle. “Maybe if we make it sound a little more liberal they’ll like us better…and at any rate we’ll attract the all-important moderates and independents.” Meanwhile, the liberals, whose power of perception never ceases to amaze me, realized that conservative principles presented as such always win.  Lo and behold the advent of the oxymoronic conservative Democrat.

You know what happened after that, because it’s been happening constantly for years. Moderate Republicans lose, and Democrats who manage to present themselves as conservatives win – and that’s why Obama won. We have to stand up ourselves for the principles of conservatism, and we need to be willing and ready to call out those who don’t, especially in our own party. Moderate Republicans have done us no favor. Let’s try true conservatism now.

The words of Ronald Reagan after a disastrous election sum this up perfectly: “Since our last meeting we have been through a disastrous election. It is easy for us to be discouraged, as pundits hail that election as a repudiation of our philosophy and even as a mandate of some kind or other. Bitter as it is to accept the results of the November election, we should have reason for some optimism. It is possible we have been persuasive to a greater degree than we had ever realized. Few, if any, Democratic Party candidates in the last election ran as liberals. Listening to them I had the eerie feeling we were hearing reruns of Barry Goldwater speeches. I even thought I heard a few of my own.”

Reagan had not been elected yet at this point, but already he was spreading the firm, solid message that would eventually place him in the White House. Let’s take hope and take heart, and raise up a whole generation of Reagans to win this country back!

God Bless!

Hi friends,

My family and I are extremely grateful for your thoughtful calls and emails. They have been a great encouragement to us.  As you know, we entered the race late.  However, we compensated for our limited time and knowledge of how to run a campaign with a passion to bring true educational reform to Arizona and a dedicated campaign team.

We have learned and grown tremendously throughout this process.  Although the residents of LD 29 elected the two Democrat candidates, we are eager to continue to serve our community.

Our family is here to stay.  We strongly believe that we must be the agents of change we desire to see in our community.  For this reason, we will continue to engage in issues affecting our State, and share our skills to bring about positive results.  On behalf of the Ciscomani Family, we thank you for believing in our vision, contributing to our campaign and casting your vote in our favor.

My email address will remain active so I hope to stay in touch.

Best,

Juan, Laura & Zoe Ciscomani

MARCHING TO THE DRUMBEAT OF FREEDOM

Nov. 1, 2008    Vol. 1  Issue 10

Wisdom From Mama Seay

Dear Patriots,

When I received the request to write a letter sharing “some wisdom” with you, I put the request on the shelf in the back of my mind to allow it to collect some dust before I responded. Over time I have learned that when I don’t immediately know what to say, giving the Holy Spirit time to speak to me often clarifies my thoughts.

Wisdom #1 – Waiting and procrastinating often look like the same thing. Learn to tell the difference.

Last Saturday I went to the wedding of a daughter of a friend of ours. It was an opportunity to touch base with some old friends I made during a particularly difficult time in my life where I learned the value of a friend who sticks closer than a brother. While the circumstances at that time in my life were not something I would wish on my enemies, I would gladly do it all again for the friendship of these dear people.

Wisdom #2 – Praise God for the difficult times you are going through. There will be a day when you will see what He already knows – it is a blessing in disguise.

Hannah, our granddaughter, has spent the last week with us while her parents have vacationed in England. I knew the fruit didn’t fall far from the tree of her grandmother the other night when she saw the two basset hounds asleep on the chaise lounge and said, “Migi, aren’t they so cute? Should I go kiss them both?” And, she did.

Wisdom #3 – There is just something about basset hounds.

During my life there have been a couple of things that the Lord has settled in my spirit once and for all. I don’t question my salvation. That has been settled. I wrestled with the Lord during a prolonged period of grief about my future. He settled in my spirit once and for all that He was sufficient to meet all my needs.

Every where I go people are talking about the presidential election. Most of the people I talk to seem to feel like it will be the end of the world as we know it if Obama wins. (Technically, they may be correct. But that isn’t my point.)

Wisdom #4 – Our hope is not in the election process. Pray for mercy for our nation and know that God is good. The outcome of the election will not take Him by surprise. God makes all things work for good for those who love him.

Be blessed!

Post-Election Thoughts from Ashley Franks by Kassie D.

These last few weeks, I’ve been pondering the presidential race, especially as we got nearer Election Day. Big surprise there.  Regardless, I was struck by the resemblance between our nation today, and the nation of Israel back in the times of Samuel.

You remember the story (it’s in 1 Samuel 8), we come onto the scene with the children of Israel clamoring for a king.  Samuel is greatly displeased by this, but the Lord told him to allow the people their wish, but to give them warning.  Samuel then proceeds to warn the people of Israel by listing the atrocities that would come to pass with a king as head of government.  ” he will take your sons and place them for himself in his chariots and among his horsemen…he will also take your daughters for perfumers and cooks and bakers, and he will take the best of your fields and your vineyards and your olive groves, and give them to his servants…and he will take a tenth of your seed and of your vineyards and give to his officers and to his servants…”  and the list goes on, but the point was that everything the people despised would happen to them if they had a king rule over them.  But did they listen??? No, they continued to clamor for a king until God gave them one.

It seems to me that is exactly what this country did last night.  No matter what facts were presented, the citizens of America didn’t listen.  They wanted what they wanted, no matter the long-term consequences. However, the parallel doesn’t have to stop there.  You may also recall, that after Israel’s bout with King Saul, God blessed them with a good king, one that was after His own heart, King David.  If you look further into the stories throughout the book of Judges, after every mistake the children of Israel made, they would repent; and God, in His mercy, would save them, and make them a great nation once again.  Unfortunately, in Israel’s case, this turned into a vicious cycle.  However, my prayer for America is that this presidential term would be a splash of cold water on a group of deceived people, and that it would cause a radical turn around come next election.   After all, we are Christians.  Our hope is in God, and He will never fail us.  He tells us that anything is possible for those who believe in Him.

To quote Mr. Green: “I am proud to be an American, but I am even more proud to call myself a Christian.”

Your Fellow Patriot,

Ashley

“Where is my golf ball?” by Hannah

Filed under: "Where is my Golf Ball?" Devotional
But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
Joshua 24:15

Thanks be to God the election is over!

I have a confession to make. I hate politics. The Lord wired me as a policy
wonk and though I try to pretend to care about politics, it is really only a
means to policy implementation for me. Some people in this realm crave the
crowds and enthusiasm of a political campaign and are bored by the
legislation and policy discussions. Give me a stack of legislation to read
and access to the legislative reference library and I am as happy as a
basset hound chewing on a pig’s ear.

Having been the candidate in two campaigns myself, my response to the
election this past Tuesday was the same as to my own – Thank God that’s
over! In one of those elections I won the seat I was running for.
Circumstances eventually made me regret the win on some days. In the other
election I lost the seat I was running for. Circumstances soon made me
rejoice the loss on most days.

So, how do I respond to the election of a candidate with whom I disagree on
just about every level of every fundamental policy near and dear to my
heart? After giving thanks that the process is over, the answer for
Christians is easy. We are to pray for our leaders so that we may live a
peaceable life (1Tim: 2:2).

My prayer before the election was that the Lord would have mercy on us as a
nation. God always answers prayers. There is the “yes” answer where I see
exactly what I asked for. The “no” answer where I see my will was not lined
up with God’s will. And then, there is the “bet you didn’t know that what
you asked for would look like this” answer.

I have the distinct impression I have received the last type of response.
But it did not come as a complete surprise.  Two weeks before the election
the Lord prompted me to read Micah. As I wrote in my journal that day, “As I
read through the book there was much on judgment and destruction and little
on hope and mercy. It is the prophecy of a nation getting EXACTLY what it
deserves for its sins.” But then the lord showed me a scripture to meditate
over:

“But as for me, I will look to the Lord, I will wait for the God of my
salvation; my God will hear me. Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I
fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me.
I will bear the indignation of the Lord because I have sinned against him,
until he pleads my call and executes justice for me. He will bring me forth
to the light; I shall behold deliverance.”

Our nation is suffering the consequences of its actions. Our core issues
continue to be spiritual, not political. We should be on our faces before
the Lord, regardless of who sits in the Oval Office.

So, suck it up. If you are grieving, get over it. If you are rejoicing,
enjoy it in moderation. Either way, begin fervently to pray for our nation.
Pray for godly wisdom and protection for our president-elect and his new
administration. Pray about what you can do to help to heal the division in
our nation between political parties and races. Pray the Lord will have
mercy on us and deliver us.

What do you think should be done about rebuilding the Republican Party? What would you suggest as a strategy for 2012? Who do you think can/should run?

Rasmussen reports

“When asked to choose among some of the GOP’s top names for their choice for the party’s 2012 presidential nominee, 64% say Palin. The next closest contenders are two former governors and unsuccessful challengers for the presidential nomination this year — Mike Huckabee of Arkansas with 12% support and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts with 11%.

Three other sitting governors – Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Charlie Crist of Florida and Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota – all pull low single-digit support.”

A Word From The Founder by Hannah

Lessons Learned from the 2008 Election: Why American values lost this one.

by Rick Green

The race for President was essentially over on February 5, 2008.

Super Tuesday night, John McCain and Barack Obama became the choice of each party and the networks all juxtaposed the two nominees side by side on the screen giving their victory speeches. Obama was surrounded by thousands of fired up citizens as he smoothly worked the stage and delivered his powerful rhetoric. Next to him on the screen was McCain with ten politicians standing behind him as he squinted and struggled to read the teleprompter and muddle through yet another incoherent speech. The Democrats nominated the best communicator of our day, while the republicans nominated the worst communicator out of the republican field. The debates were an absolute rout, actually embarrassing for the republicans as Obama managed to serve up lies and deception on a silver platter with all the fancy fixings and McCain whiffed at softball after softball.

Should style and communication skills trump substance and positions on the issues? Of course not. But they do. It is not enough to have the right position or idea. If one cannot communicate that idea or position effectively, it goes nowhere. When the opposition lies and deceives, it is not enough to whine about the media not doing their job, you have to point out the deception and do battle effectively in the arena of ideas.

So lesson number one in this election is that we ignored the first part of God’s command for how we choose our leaders. He said in Exodus 18:21 for us to “choose out from among you able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness.” In the sound bite world we now live, a candidate that cannot communicate is not an able man (or woman!).

Lesson number two is simply that the American people only choose leftist leaders when those leaders deceive the people into believing they are something they are not. Florida and California voted to define marriage as one man and one woman and on the exact same ballot elected a man who is against doing so. Does anyone actually believe that Obama would have won if every single voter knew about his relationships with terrorists, felons, and Marxists? Or just how radical his pro-abortion positions are? That he supports socialist policies of redistributing the wealth? The only people aware of these positions were the ones watching Fox News because the rest of the media avoided these issues like the plague and the McCain campaign made the foolish decision of playing nice and ignoring most of these issues as well. So if a candidate is good at deception and the opposition is lousy at exposing it or unwilling to do so, the result is a foregone conclusion.

Lesson number three:  whoever works hardest and smartest has the advantage. Let’s face it, the Obama campaign ran circles around the opposition. They were more organized, more creative, worked harder, and simply executed their game plan better. Yes, they had more money because of Obama’s broken promises on campaign finance and because they accepted $200 Million in undisclosed internet contributions, but it was more what they did with the resources they had than the fact they had more resources with which to work. As a student at Patriot Academy (www.patriotacademy.com ) told me this past summer, the democrats figured out the medium has changed to the internet and republicans have not…the same as in 1960 when television became the new medium. Once again, it cost us an election.

Lesson number four: traditional values Americans are too busy enjoying the fruits of labor from the last generation and too few are accepting their responsibility to participate actively in their government and do their duty. It is time to wake up. It is time for Pastors to be more vocal on the issues, as they were in California with Prop 8, and they must also be more vocal about connecting the dots between the issues and the candidates. We need spiritual leaders willing to speak the truth and we need to be hungry for that truth and act on that truth.

Lesson number five: when republicans act like democrats, we lose. When democrats talk like republicans, they win. We nominated a republican who prefers to talk about what he has in common with his opponent rather than point out the differences, which only confuses voters and opens the door for the opponent to define the differences. The last thing republicans need to do now is run to the middle believing that is where the voters are…wrong conclusion! We need to get back to the basic traditional American values that made the nation great and that win elections when articulated correctly by a candidate like Ronald Reagan. And we must make a pact with the people that we will govern by those values and not abandon them as conservatives did over the last few years.

We now have a clean slate and an opportunity to raise our standards. Let us look for conviction oriented conservatives who can articulate our values and who will stand by them. It is time to speak truth in love and not a time to dance around the major issues facing our nation. Certain issues should be non-negotiable and never trumped by style, race, or party…they are listed in our Nation’s birth certificate as “…unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” For a more detailed description of what issues fall under these rights, read my book Freedom’s Frame (www.rickgreen.com), which also discusses in detail what we can each do to preserve that frame.

It is time to equip, inspire, and engage conservatives to get off the sidelines and into the game.  Sulking under the bleachers is not an option. If you care about this Country and the future your children will inherit, then step up. You do not have to have all the answers to get involved, just showing up is half the battle. If you are looking for a place to start, join us in training and equipping young people through Patriot Academy, or get involved with a local political party or “salt and light” organization in your church, or just simply have some friends and neighbors over to start talking about how to get involved. There will be plenty of opportunities in the coming months and we’ll do our best to keep you informed of ways to get involved when you listen to WallBuilders Live! on your local station or at www.wallbuilderslive.com

Take heart, there is a HUGE remnant of people in America that share your values and are disgusted by this election and anxious for our future. Pray for God to raise up leaders of conviction that fit the description he gave us…able, God-fearing, honest, selfless individuals who without hesitation will put the good of the nation above their own.

“Where is my golf ball?” by Hannah

Filed under: "Where is my Golf Ball?" Devotional

Do not be afraid of sudden panic, or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes; for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.

Proverbs 3:25-26

I’m back! Did you miss me?  I realized this morning that since I last wrote the price of a gallon of gas has gone down at least a dollar, the weather has changed from summer to fall, and the headlines were dealing with the economic bailout, not the upcoming election. Wow! A lot can happen in a month.

Our family is dealing with the illness of my father-in-law. He has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a lung disease that progressively worsens over time. He was a heavy smoker for forty years and worked in a steel mill – both factors contributing to the severity of his condition. In addition to dealing with the disease, we are dealing with the complications of the treatments he has been given over time to lessen the symptoms. Heavy doses of steroids reduce inflammation in the airways. They also leech calcium out of the bones, resulting in extremely painful stress fractures in the spine. In the past six weeks, we have had calls notifying us of three trips to the emergency room, the last one a life flight call.

Each time he has rallied. Each time we have rejoiced that this was not “the call.” My mother-in-law entertains the idea that if we can move him to a better climate, if they can clear up the infections in his lungs, if they can adjust his medications, if they can . . . then he will get better. But, apart from a miracle from God, COPD is what it is. The outcome is determined; the timing is all we are waiting on.

And, so it is with our nation. We have fallen into the quagmire of socialism – with the consent of both political parties. As conservatives waged the war to prevent the spread of socialized medicine, they were unprepared to prevent the socialization of our banking system and auto manufacturing industries. In an attempt to not lose what we have, we have passed policies that will end in our losing our freedoms. Like steroid treatment for COPD, government intrusions into the markets leech economic freedom from our foundation. It is a temporary fix that will kill you.

Socialism is what it is. The outcome of socialism has been determined. It results in higher taxes, fewer choices and creates a disincentive to productivity. Allowing the philosophy to take its natural course will result in the end of those freedoms which make our country great. The timing is all we are waiting on. Will it happen on our watch?

Scripture promises that, “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” Notice it doesn’t specify whether the Lord needs a Republican or a Democrat in office to achieve His purpose – only His people on their knees.

Tomorrow is Election Day. The results matters. But, regardless of the outcome, do not assume that this is “the call.”

Lord, forgive us for engaging in politics when we should be on our faces in prayer. May our hope only be in You.
